For The Record

Cal and I returned home last night from a marvelous weekend getaway to St. George. My parents own a house down South and every chance we have, we zip on down.

More about St. George trip in a future blog post. For now, I have some other thoughts to share...

*warning... this might entail some complaining*

As of late I seem to be getting a lot of questions/concerns/grief regarding the fact that I have not changed my last name. To be clear, I do not plan on changing my name anytime in the near future.

To address some of the questions I have received:
1. I do not think that Fry is a bad last name
2. I do not think that Peterson is a better last name than Fry
3. I do love my husband; the fact that I have not chosen to change my last name has absolutely nothing to do with my love for Cal
4. To address the topic of future children: I do not know what we will decide to do -- this is not even a concern yet as a) we do not have children at this point in time, b) we do not plan on having children for quite some time and c) we currently have other issues to deal with
5. The fact that Peterson has remained my last name does not in any way, shape or form mean that Cal and I are planning on getting a divorce, nor does it mean that I'm keeping Peterson "just in case"

I am remaining as Elizabeth Peterson not to make a point, not to create a discussion around dinner tables and certainly not to prove anything. I have been a Peterson for 22 years of my life. It is how I identify myself.

I plan/hope to publish while earning my Master's. I want my name on those articles to appear "Elizabeth Peterson". So shoot me.

I hope to one day go on for my PhD. I envision myself as Dr. Peterson, not Dr. Fry... that was Cal's grandpa (I wish I could have met him).

For personal correspondences, Cal and I have chosen to use "Peterson-Fry", hence the name of this blog. When to receive a holiday card from us down the road, it will likely say "Peterson-Fry". This is something that WE (that includes Cal) are completely comfortable with.

Someday I might change my last name to Fry. It's not completely out of the question. In a couple of years Cal and I will reassess the situation. Until then... You can call me Liz Peterson, Elizabeth Peterson, Liz Fry, Elizabeth Fry, Elizabeth Peterson-Fry, Liz Peterson-Fry, Lizzy Fry, Lizzy Peterson-Fry or Lizzy Peterson. Take your pick -- you have some options, and options are always good :)

Cal changes what he calls me nearly every day. Cute boy.

I realize this might sound like an odd blog post... But with all of the questions we seem to be getting asked, I needed to get it off my chest somehow. That is the purpose of a blog, right?

That's all for now. Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Peterson-Fry

  1. And THIS is why I love you, Liz. I am proud of you for standing up for what YOU want - despite the remarks/opinions/complaints of others. I love you whether you're a fry or a peterson.... cuz you're just Liz. :)

  3. You make me laugh! I was really getting worried about you. Brian and I were having conversations almost nightly around the dinner table about when you might change your name (just kidding). I think you should do what makes you most happy. Way to go!
