I think I "Miss"ed something...

This morning a sweet elderly woman caught my attention by saying, "Excuse me, ma'am. How do you get to ......?"

She stopped me dead in my tracks.

When did people stop referring to me as "miss" and begin referring to me as "ma'am"? When did I become "ma'am"? I think I missed the part where I aged enough to be referred to as "ma'am"....

I miss being referred to as "miss"....

Do you start getting called ma'am after you get married?
Do you start getting called ma'am when you graduate from university?
Do you start getting called ma'am when you have kids?

Which brings me to my final question: At what point in time is it appropriate to call a woman ma'am?

  1. It's an awful day. I remember I had my first "ma'am" experience at Costco earlier this year. You wonder how did you get here and can you get back?

  2. I hate getting called "ma'am" - it makes me feel so old! I'm totally with you on this one.
