My First Cavity

I have prided myself on being cavity free for the past 24 years. Unfortunately, I can't do that anymore.

I had a "little" (the dentist said little, so I'm sticking with that) cavity filled this afternoon. Boo. Apparently the seal the put on my tooth like 6 years ago had a tiny bit of decay. Seal (lack of O2) + decay = cavity. Ugh.
(My half numb face -- it's on the right side, as you can tell)

Apparently I looked devastated upon hearing the news. The dentist immediately said, "Elizabeth, this is no big deal. In fact, we'll take care of it right now. Small procedure and minimal pain." I had to explain my devastation - it's not that I was worried to get the cavity filled, it's the cavity's presence in and of itself!

He assured me its presence wasn't because of poor oral hygiene. I listened half heartedly. I then nearly fell of the dental chair with fear as the thought of having a metal filling crossed my mind.

"Am I going to have a metal thing in my tooth?! Will everyone see if when I open my mouth?!" (Being a speech pathologist, people are constantly looking in my mouth as I show them what to do/where to place their tongue.)

Luckily, the answer was no. Thank HEAVENS there are now fillings that match tooth color. Apparently I'm a B1, whatever that means.

(You can't even see it!)

I've decided to blame this misfortune - as I have all other misfortunes in the past 2 years - on graduate school. That's fair, right?

  1. Oh my! I just had my first cavity too like 6 months ago! It was like the saddest thing ever! I loved playing the game, Have you ever...and could say that I have never had a cavity. And of course my father in law had to find it! Luckily mine was tiny too and I didn't need numbing or anything...but still!! I wholeheartedly blame grad school! Congrats on Cal's school, graduation and your puppy!!

  2. Coming from a cavity whore, this probably doesn't mean much, but GREAT JOB on going cavity-free for 24 years!! Aren't you glad they have white fillings now?? Lol I love your posts!
P.S. I feel I have to clarify my first statement - I have only had 8 cavities in my 27 years on this earth and I have no "metal cavities". That's good right??
