So off he went. (I considered going, but after a talk with the one individual I was interested in working with at U of I, I decided not to.) He even got to try out my new luggage, lucky boy.
CBF had a blast meeting new people and getting Illinois loot. He found that when people asked him where he lived in Salt Lake, he said "up a canyon". He also stated that some of his favorite hobbies were mountain biking, ATVing, and playing basketball. I guess he might have gotten some funny looks, because soon he realized he sounded a bit like a hick or kind of granola. (His words, not mine.) "I wanted to make sure they didn't think that so I made sure to wear nice clothes, including a Penguin shirt to the pub," CBF said. Man, I love that guy.All in all, he had a blast and is super excited to move there in August.
I spent my weekend with the family, going to a baby shower (so excited for you Bart and Canessa!), and spending time with my Nana & Papa. Papa is having open heart surgery this very moment. The decision to do this surgery was relatively fast due to the angiogram results last Thursday. He requires his aortic valve to be replaced, as well as 4-5 bypasses. They're taking some veins from his legs for the surgery, too.
At 79, this surgery is not a walk in the park, and the recovery is going to be nothing short of brutal. We fasted as a family yesterday for him, and made sure to spend a lot of time with him this weekend. I love him to the moon and back, and I'm very anxiously awaiting news about his 6 hour surgery.
I'm off to sit anxiously by the phone to hear news about my Papa. It's funny how in moments like these my thesis, publishing articles, and earning a PhD seem so trivial.

I'll keep your grandpa in my prayers! Hope everything went perfectly, as I am sure it will!!
